Installing .NET Core SDK fails.

    Question

  • Hello,

I am trying to install the .NET Core SDK version 2.2.203 (latest as of today), but the installation fails immediately with error, "User cancelled installation." with "Retry" and "Cancel" buttons. I did not cancel the installation. Clicking Retry immediately results in the same window appearing. I did run the installer as administrator.

If I click "Cancel" I get a "Setup Failed" window with the following:

    Setup Failed

One or more issues caused the setup to fail. Please fix the issues and then retry setup. For more information see the log file.

    0x80070642 - User cancelled installation.

I have noticed problems installing various other pieces of software. All of the ones that fail seem to be ones which attempt to launch some other process with elevated privileges.

  • Hi Charles Allen Jr

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

There are a couple of reasons why you might receive that error code of User Cancelled Installation. here is some workaround to troubleshooting it:

    • Kill all process in task manager
    • make sure windows update is installed
    • Restart the computer again, attempt the installer again but this time right click and select Run as Administrator.
    • Disable anti-virus
    • Perform a clean boot to check if any third party application is causing the issue, as clean boot helps in eliminating software conflicts. Please refer to these steps: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows

Please feel free to let me know if it works to you.

    Sincerely

    May

  • Hello May,

Thank you for your reply. I did end up fixing the problem by reinstalling windows. Overkill, but it did work. Before I opened this issue I had actually tried most of the troubleshooting steps you recommended. The only ones I did not try were: disabling anti-virus (I have Windows Defender), and trying the install during a clean boot.

I would have tried those steps as well if I hadn't already done the reinstall. Unfortunately I cannot say whether they would have helped or not.

Thank you again though for all the help.

  • Hi Charles Allen Jr

First of all, I am glad to hear you solved this issue, although this workaround is not a bit of convenient. At the same time, I am sorry I have not good solution could woks on this issue.

I will close this case until you mark your workaround as answer. If you met any trouble with .NET framework setup or else. Please post new thread in an appropriate area in MSDN.

    Enjoy a new day!
