  • Hi,

Try installing latest version of Skype (not before 5.5.0.119). Also try updating all the drivers. I was facing the same issue, but I updated the drivers and Skype and now it works fine. Sporadically, if it crashes, I need to run it with different graphics processor (I've 2 graphics processors, default is onboard Intel and another one is nVidia). Not sure, if it's the same case with you.

  • To add to Eric - the very latest release of Skype 5.5 has been updated.

I had to install it in order for Skype to work properly.

  • I have Skype 5.5 on an Atom/netbook and get the same crash at login screen.

Tried Run as Admin and Compatibility mode running as WinXP but no luck.

Also have Aero effects disabled for what its worth.

All patches that Windows Update offers have been installed for Win8.

  • Hey Techdudejuly2009,

Take a look at the information provided in this thread, a different version of Skype may not have this problem on your system:
Skype not working on the Windows Developer Preview

    Hope that helps.
