SSAS with Power BI RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

I have created a SSAS tabular model and I want to create reports using SSAS model in Power BI. Can someone please suggest which options would be better and widely used. for example LIVE or store data on Power BI APP server ? Please share best possible approaches from BEST practices.

  • It is best for live connection because the data does not have to be refreshed and business rules stay locked in Tabular Model.

It is complicated to setup Gateway, but it is worth it.

  • Hi Arnav1210,

It really depends on your business requirements.

When connecting live, no data from the Tabular model is imported into Power BI Desktop. Each time you interact with a visualization. You're always looking at the latest data that is available in the Tabular model, either from the last processing time, or from Direct Query tables available in the Tabular Model.

When you publish a Power BI Desktop file with a live connection to a Tabular model to your Power BI site, an On-premises data gateway must be installed and configured by an administrator.

When you connect with import option, all the items you selected will be loaded into the Power BI desktop model. The memory usage on the server may tick up. But the advantage is you can then explore your Power BI Desktop offline or publish to your Power BI site.

Both methods have limitations. For import it is mainly refresh frequency, data size and necessity to duplicate same logic(calculations, security) in multiple reports. For live connection, you're limited just to that one data source for report. If logic is setup on source side, all reports can benefit.

Personally, it's recommended that use live connection against SSAS models, have the model centralized and maintain logic in one place. The performance is better and more security, but you need to install gateway if you publish the report to Power BI service.
