SQL Server Express 2008 fails to install with Web Platform Installer RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everybody,

I am trying to install on my computer, which runs on Windows 7 x86, Visual Web Developer Express 2010. According to Microsoft download website, the only way to install this product is through the Web Platform Installer.

When I try to install Visual Web Developer Express 2010, the Web Platform Installer identifies a dependency with SQL Server Express 2008 R2 and attempts to install this component as well.

Unfortunately the Web Platform Installer, after a long time spent in attempting to install the SQL Server Express 2008 R2, gives me an installation failure message without specifying the reason. Of course, give the dependency, failure to install the SQL Server Express 2008 R2 block the installation of Visual Web Developer Express 2010.

I did not have any previous version of SQL Server on my laptop and after the installation failed I cleaned the registries by using the CCleaner software from Piriform. I also tried to install SQL Server Express 2008 R2 without using the Web Platform Installer but when I attempted to install Visual Web Developer Express 2010 the Web Platform Installer didn't find the installation already present in the machine and, when I went further with the installation procedure, was giving me the same error. Hereby I attach the installation log.

I hope somebody might help, thanks in advance

    Hi CatVet,

Based on your description and the error message, it might be caused by the SQL Server is not uninstalled completely.

To fix this issue, please follow the below steps to uninstall SQL Server 2008 R2 completely, and then try to reinstall:

    1. Remove all SQL Server components from 'Programs and Features'
    2. Backup the registry
    3. Delete the following keys in regedit:

    --HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server

    --HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer

    1. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall  and delete all the sub-keys referencing SQL Server
    1. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services and delete all the keys referencing SQL Server
    2. Rename all the SQL Server folders in the computer, such as C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server.
    3. Reboot the machine
    4. Install SQL Server 2008 R2 under an administrator account again

If there are any questions, please feel free to ask.

    Thanks,
    Weilin Qiao

  • Hey there. Sorry you're having problems with the Web Platform Installer.

When you open it, can you try to click on "Products" at the top. It should list all of the products that it could install. Then sort the list by "Name". Scroll down and see what the platform installer sees for:

    • SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Studio Express
    • SQL Server 2008 R2

On my system it says "Installed" for both. This means that it shouldn't decide to install them. Is that what it says for you?

I assume that you're just adding the Visual Web Developer 2010 Express product?

I will try to do this on a test machine to see what happens. But I thought I get this information from you first.

    Thanks.
