Transferring existing VM infrastructure to Azure RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am investigating the possibility of migrating our current on premise virtual machine environments to a cloud solution. I am slightly confused as to whether Azure would be able to do this or if it is appropriate.

    We have servers with OS's Windows XP, 7, 8, Server 2003 - 2008.

We also have our company domain server installed to VM (2008 server)

Having done some reading I don't think that Azure can do this, it only supports server 2008 - 2012 from what i can tell but I thought I would ask the question.

    thanks

  • Without knowing more about your overall scenario, it is hard for me to say what a good approach might be and how much of it you might want to consider running in Azure.

But you are correct in that only Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 are the supported Windows guest OS versions.

See the "Can customers run Microsoft Office and Windows 7 Client on Virtual Machines using License Mobility for Software Assurance?" question in the licensing FAQ:

    http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/pricing/licensing-faq/

And the supported OS versions and roles are referenced in KB 2721672:

    Thanks,
