Visual Studio Installer Error " The specified service does not exist as an installed service"

    Question

  • I am trying to install Visual Studio on to a Windows 7 computer and a error pops up stating "The specified service does not exist as an installed service". I do not have a clue what that means and I have tried to find out but have not come up with a answer. Does any one have a solution to get it installed?

  • Hi JMartian,

Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.

Firstly, please tell us the VS edition you would like to install.

For example, if you want to install the VS 2015, here is a system requirement you may refer to:

    https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/productinfo/vs2015-sysrequirements-vs

Since you OS is Win 7, Have you installed the Win 7 Sp 1?

If not, please check all the windows update and install the Win 7 SP 1 from following link:

  • I am trying to install VS Community 2015 and I have service pack 1 installed. Also I have all the specs required. Does it matter that it is Windows 7 Professional? -JMartian

  • Hi JMartian,

    >>Does it matter that it is Windows 7 Professional?

As we know,in contrast, win7 is an old operation system, if some updates do not install, as the error information shows, your machine does not support service to install the VS 2015.

You may try to run [System File Checker] SFC scan on the computer which would scan for corrupt system files on the computer and replace them.

  • Hi JMartian,

If the above still doesn't help, I need you installation log file to troubleshoot this issue,
please use http://aka.ms/vscollect to gather the installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.zip from %temp% folder. Please upload the file to  https://onedrive.live.com/ and share the link here

  • Ok now rather than stating that the service does not exist it states "The specified program requires a newer version of Windows". Which doesn't make since considering that the computer fits all the requirements.

  • I re-downloaded the install file and it worked and Visual Studio is installed and looks to be working. Thank you very much Lana.
