How Does Distance Matrix API Compute Transit Travel Times? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I plan on pulling a Distance Matrix API request to get public transportation transit times from all subway /bus stops in NYC to Grand Central Station. Will the outputted travel time be based on real-time transit data? I noticed I cannot specify a start time for this mode, so is it using the current start time, or historical data?

  • Hi Dobster,

I think it really depends on the input you give to the API.  The high level explanation is available here:

...the Bing Maps Distance Matrix API assists in calculating travel time and distances in many-to-many scenarios with an optional travel-time histogram. Used to optimize routing, the Distance Matrix API service determines the best route possible, by reordering stops based on the trip’s parameters, including time or distance, mode of transportation, start and end time, predicted traffic, and more.

You could try a few parameters to see how what you give it impacts the results.
