Architecture advise WebServer vs Application Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear all,

I have a big delema on trying to explain the difference between a web server and an application server. Let me explain the situation first. we have a sql database which will be used to build machine data parameter. The solution will be flexible enough and accessible either online or off line.

So based on that I need to think of an suitable architecture design.

The database will be accessible from client application through web services
Client application can be a web app or a desktop application

Based on my question in the tite :

A web server for me is nothing else than a suitable server which is configure to host web application and web service and reply to http request. Web server usual host only the client application. The database can be place totally in different server for better maintainability i guest, correct ?

An application server is for me a server which is a bit more powerful and on which we have preliminary published network application and accessible from thin client over a terminal service connection. The server is handling all the resources to be deliver to client , correct ?

But an application server could be configure also as a web server correct ?

How can I explain the difference to my customer in clear words ?
