Can't Install the Kinect RRS feed

  • Question

  • I know this has been asked plenty of times, but each time has a different resolution.

I cannot get the Kinect v1 SDK installed. Previously I had  the kinect sdk beta1 installed and my Kinect worked fine.

I uninstalled that beta from the original installer for it, as well as uninstalling the language pack from the control panel.

When I run the "KinectSDK-v1.0-Setup.exe", the language pack is installed properly and then it breaks. It breaks when it says "Processing: Microsoft Kinect drivers(64 bit)" and then it says " Setup Failed.  An error ocurred while installing: Details: "  with no details or error code. When I look at control panel, the Language pack is successfully installed.

    Computer Specs:

    Dell Optiplex 960

Windows 7 Enterprise (64 bit) with all available updates.

    Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz 2.67GHz

    4.00 GB Ram

    I have .NET 4.0 installed

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the DirectX SDK and the DirectX runtime.

I have Visual Studio 2010 professional installed.

I have run the installer as an Admin.

I have emptied the Temp folder and removed Microsoft Server Speech Platform Runtime

It's failing when its installing drivers so I looked at the x64Drivers  log file

  • I just have one question have you installed the kinect runtime also? The kinect runtime installed with kinect sdk v1 can cause problems in development if debugging with xbox kinect but sometimes the runtime can act weird with installed with full sdk. Try making sure not to install runtime on development machine because sdk has everything you need and runtime is just for production or end-user machines. Also, make sure open ni and conflicting programs are uninstalled which include unregistering scott's webcam directshow filter for kinect with beta 2 which he used on this forum to get kinect rgb video to show up in skype and it will not work with beta 1 but he still has beta 2 code posted.

  • Nope, I don't have the runtime installed. At least, as far as I know.

  • Okay have any images to post maybe? Although probably wouldnt help as much in your instance never know.

Their was one problem where kinect sdk had a certificate revocation list setting in internet explorer i think that was like yours and it got solved let me search around a bit for it.

Edit: okay try this link for the certificate problem in internet explorer that causes the driver to not install because of certificate revocation:

    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/kinectsdk/thread/5acb7703-4b5b-4902-8472-dac6a20c84c5

remember op if i was helpful mark as helpful or if I answered your question please mark as answered so we dont get confused as to who we answered and didnt

  • Changing the CRL didn't work either. Thanks for your help though!

  • can you post the setup log and the driver setup log?

Find the temp directory – from a command prompt:
    set TEMP
    cd to the temp directory
    dir /OD Setup*.log

For the driver setup log, look for *_x64Drivers.log

  • Here's the setup log, but the drivers log is too big to post, it would take about 8-10 posts to post it all. I had posted the part that looked suspicious to me in the OP. Is there a specific part you want me to find?

  • Any luck? I'm in a time crunch right now. I'm about to have to just wipe my computer and start over. Right now I can only test my project on my partner's computer

  • try cleanmgr /sageset:255 which is the command line of disk cleanup and allows you to clean out system files although for this error copy your log files just in case and dont delete any logs in that list. It might help. It helps me sometimes with those weird errors but in some instances I have to hunt down a solution. I think i do need to clean up my hard drive I had 6 gb in junk temp files.

  • Well that was a good attempt, I hadn't cleared out all of those temporary files.

After clearing those out, I went through and removed the speech platform and the kinect language pack from my last install attempt and tried to install again. Same results, it gets through the language pack and breaks on the drivers. The logs still look the same.

  • Sorry it didnt work I will look into the matter more also. Probably should do a virus scan too maybe a previous virus took over something. I have successfully installed kinect on dells and ibms at my work (newer and older ones) so it could be a configuration issue too of something or the drivers dont like your usb  hardware (a few months back someone had problems with using kinect on usb 3.0 controllers but I think that was in beta so it might have been fixed in v1 sdk).

I usually do directx runtime, kinect sdk, kinect language runtime, speeck sdk (if i was installing one), and no runtime on development pc so I can use my xbox kinect during debugging. Also, I like to install in a certain order because i know that I get the biggest part of what I want installed if one software part fails.

Make sure to fully remove kinect sdk and directx runtime for sure because they rely on each other and reinstalling them both would help kinect language pack is a different installation which I recommend installing before speech above in my list. edit: posted new order list of installation.

  • Thanks for your continued help!

    Virus scan came back clean.

We've installed the kinect on the exact same computer (hardware specs and windows 7...may have different software somewhere) without any problems, we're just unable to get it to work on mine.

Every time I try to install, I remove:

MS Kinect Speech Recognition language pack.

MS Server Speech Platform Runtime x86  and x64

but directx isn't listed in my control panel... I can try to manually reinstall that first.

How do you install kinect language separately? All I have found for kinect SDK v1 is a single .exe that installs the correct version(64bit or 32bit) and installs the language pack as well.

  • DIFXAPP: ERROR:  PnP Install failed. (Error code 0x3EE: The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid.)

Did you check permissions this error sounds like a permissions and/or file write/read error I think you should run as administrator if you havent. Also, you can manually check for failed installs in device manger by typing devmgmt.msc in windows 7 start menu search bar and then right click the kinect device if its only partially installing and then click uninstall. In addition, their might be an unblock box in windows 7 in the kinect sdk installers file properties and/or double check file permissions but I doubt this has happened.

Tell me if any of this helps but if kinect device doesnt have an ! arrow beside it or doesnt show up in device manager then its not even going through driver installation. Also, while im thinkinh about it if you already downloaded in-between our conversations a fresh new version of kinect sdk (not runtime) please use that one for re-installation

  • What permissions do I need to check? I can't figure out where to look for Difx,

The kinect device isn't ever getting installed because it breaks during installing drivers. If I plug in the kinect it just tells me unknown device.

I'm running the latest kinect sdk installer as administrator

  • Just if its not set to read-only mode and make sure you have permissions to execute and read/write from/to the file. Yeah other then that im stumped. Todd or anyone else have any ideas?

  • unfortunately, the other two people that ran into this ended up re-imaging their machines. I've done some searches on the DIFX error and the MSI error Error 0x80070643 and there are some steps that people have tried, but it all seems to be related to file corruption.

  • Are there any ideas about what files could be corrupted? This is a development computer with a couple years of libraries and SDKs on it.... re-imaging is not a viable solution yet.

I just experimented and found out that beta 2 can be installed without any problems. However, I'm competing in the Microsoft Imagine Cup and I need to have v1 to install the gadget software...

  • I'll get with the setup dev tomorrow and see if we can work out a solution or workaround.

  • can you try deleting everything in C:\ProgramData\PackageCache and redownloading and running the setup exe?

  • Thanks. I tried that and it didn't work.

Previous to this attempt I actually went through and uninstalled VS2010 and .Net 4.0 and then reinstalled VS2010, .Net 4.0, and DirectX
