  • Maybe, I had the same problem.

The problem was the virus scanner. With the Virus Scanner (McAfee) was the same problem with the mozilla plug-in.

I can install .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 without the virus scanner (McAfee switch off).

  • Hi Ranjana,

Here is the error in the log files (also seen in the eventlogs you mentioned above):

    MSI (s) (FC:3C) [11:25:18:948]: Note: 1: 1401 2: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MozillaPlugins\@microsoft.com/WPF,version=3.5 3: 2

Error 1406.Could not write value Description to key \SOFTWARE\MozillaPlugins\@microsoft.com/WPF,version=3.5.  System error .  Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

You may want to take a look at the following and see if you have the right access to the registry key mentioned:

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/docid/2004010816083736?Open&docid=2001120311201036&nsf=nip.nsf&view=4a29389c214c78ea88256c75005f451a

Please do let us know if this doesn't work for you.

    Thanks,

    Kanchan

  • Thanks I also check the log files, and found this line:

    Code Snippet
MSI (s) (74:D4) [11:22:30:626]: Error in rollback skipped. Return: 5

It seems to be a registry permission problem, so could you please try Solving setup errors by using the SubInACL tool to repair file and registry permissions.

    Thanks

  • I know this is an old issue but I had what appears to be the same issue when installing .NET 3.5.

What was happening in my situation is that McAffee VirusScan was blocking access to the HKLM\SOFTWARE\MozillaPlugins registry key.  (The .NET 3.5 installer adds what appears to be a WPF/XAML Mozilla plugin)

Disable VirusScan's "Access Protection" feature and it should work.

I hope this helps someone because this was very frustrating to track down.  I still don't understand why it's installing the MozillaPlugins registry entry as I do not have FireFox installed.
