Licensing rights for small dev team - 2015 CE

    Question

  • Hello everyone!

I belong to a small independent dev team (4 people) that is currently in talks with a bigger company in order to do software development for them. For legal purposes, my team and the bigger company are entirely separate companies.

We're interested in using Visual Studio 2015 Community Edition to perform the various development tasks for this customer. Reading the current license terms for this product, it seems to be implied that small dev teams, of 5 or fewer people, should be able to create apps/libs/whatever with this version of Visual Studio for commercial purposes. We're not sure, however.

Can somebody confirm if this is true? Can a small dev team, doing work for a bigger company, use VS 2015 CE to do software development in accordance to its license terms?

  • You can get opinions here on your licensing question, but not an authoritative answer.

In my OPINION, your small organization (as long as you don't exceed the revenue limit stated in the license) meets the criteria to use VS CE.
