404 Error from Routes REST API - One or more waypoints can't be routed because they are too far from any roads RRS feed

  • Question

  • Recently I have started to see this error occur when trying to get a Route between two waypoints:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><Response xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/search/local/ws/rest/v1"><Copyright>Copyright © 2017 Microsoft and its suppliers. This is the response text back from "http://dev.virtualearth.net/REST/V1/Routes/Driving" when queried a couple standard options. This doesn't occur on every request only a few.

I've made sure that any waypoint I'm using is close to a road but I can't seem to understand why this is happening more and more. Any thoughts would be appreciated

  • That's a valid error. Can you provide the waypoints you are passing in?

  • So it ended up that one point was 45 miles away from a road which I missed in my initial assessment. I had to plot all of the points on a map to see which ones could be off. The error was legitimate after that extra review an I now have my points corrected to create a route properly.

Do you know that the tolerance is for how far a waypoint can be away from an actual road before that error occurs?

  • Generally routes will only snap to roads if they are within 150 meters meters or so. This is a common standard used in most mapping platforms.
