Looking for help using dependency graph feature RRS feed

  • Question

  • I liked Soma's blog on architecture tools, but I'm looking for more detail on how to make best use the new dependency graph feature.  Where do I find the online docs?  Do you have any video walkthroughs?  For example, I'm having trouble generating a complete dependency graph on a subset of my classes using the Architecture Explorer.

  • The docs on the Architecture Explorer are here :

There is a video up here that shows you how to create a dependency graph on a targetted set of classes:

Some other videos that might also be handy: Standard Dependency Graphs and Directed Graph Documents.

In the future you can post questions about the Architecture tools on this forum:

  • Thanks for your post, JK. Can you provide more specifics about what you want to do? Your feedback would help us make sure the documentation has what you're looking for.

  • Chris' video on the Architecture Explorer explained it well.  I was trying to understand why the Architecture Explorer has a "Create New Graph" button when most of the time it was producing very few links.  Now I realize I have to select the methods to get the calls and then I get more links on the graph but this can get tedious.  I'd like to have the following:

    1) A quick way to get all dependencies between the specific classes I've selected in the Architecture Explorer
    2) A way to get all the dependencies on a method or class I'm looking at in my source code window (Right click "Generate Dependency Graph"?)

The global Architecture menu "Generate Dependency Graph" command is great for looking at my whole solution, but most of the time my solution is too big and I don't want to wait that long to get a huge graph then delete tons of stuff that I didn't want in the first place.  I want to start with a smaller more targetted set and work from there.

    Thanks for the help.
