Collecting errors on client machine RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

    We are planning on collecting errors that happen in our winform application such as location of object reference error and null reference error, we are planning to collect only method name and class names aka stack trace.

    should we ask permission of end clients to get stack trace?

  • If there is user sensitive data either ask permission or scrub the data while scrubbing data will be a learning process to know what to scrub so the best option is to ask permission.

  • We are not planning to collect any user data, just stack trace which has method name and class name. we donot want to scare our customers as our app deals with databases and servers.

  • Hi,

    To get the stack trace, you can use the property "Exception.StackTrace".

        private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
        {
            int a = 1;
            int b = 0;
            try
            {
                Console.WriteLine(a / b);
            }
            catch (Exception ex)
            {
                Console.WriteLine("\nStackTrace ---\n{0}", ex.StackTrace);
            }
        }

    For more info, you can refer to the document Exception.StackTrace Property.

  • Hi,

    I think it is necessary to inform users of what information has been collected on their clients.
