The N Software adapters do not handle MAPI and you cannot use the POP3 adapter with MAPI. You should ask your IT administrators if they can enable POP3 on your Exchange server. The N Software adapters do enable you to work over IMAP as an option as well. Both POP3 and IMAP can be secured: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997149.aspx.
Here is a link on enabling POP3 in Exchange: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124934.aspx. There is a similar one on enabling IMAP: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124489.aspx.
Thanks,

Ben is right.
"The Adapter uses the SMTP protocol to send email and the IMAP and POP3 protocols to fetch emails to and from any mail server over Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protected channels."
Thanks for the correction Ben
