XpsDrvSmpl, Color Management works in Win 7, but not in 8.1 or in 10 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm using XPSDrvSmpl as a starting point for a virtual Printer Driver. The color management filter is working as intended in Win 7 but not in Win 8.1 or Win 10.

If I try to print (using win explorer, right click print) an image with an embedded ICC Profile (e.g. AdobeRGB) on XPSDrvSmpl printer, this ICC Profile is ignored in Win 8.1 and in Win 10. Surprisingly it is considered in Win 7 as it should.

There are two ways how the embedded Profile should be affecting the output: First (DMICMMETHOD_DRIVER), the Driver should use this profile as an input profile to calculate the color transform. Second (DMICMMETHOD_DEVICE), this ICC profile should remain embedded in the image that will be stored in the XPS output file. As mentioned: This is working in Win7 but not in Win8.1 and 10.

You can see the effect very easily if you use an test image like this: profile test image.

Any idea to make this work in Win 8.1 and 10 or is it a motivation to still recommend win 7?

  • It seems that it's not a problem of the driver...

... it's a problem of the "photo printing wizard" of win 8.1/10
