Turn on Sharepoint 2013 Designer for a Single Collection RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are in a situation where our farm administrators want to restrict access to the Sharepoint Designer except for a single collection.  The farm admins do not want collection admins making this decision.  How can a farm admin, turn on designer for a single collection while keeping all other collection without designer access?

So far the problem is that if our farm admins turn on designer it will open it up to all collection admins.

  • You can either disable SPD global or at the site collection level.  If you want to use it in one site collection then your only choice is to disable it in every other site collection, but leave it available global.  The farm setting will take precedence if you turn it off there.

  • I don't think this is a solution.  If we enable it at the global level, and turn it off in all the other collections, a collection admin for those sites could turn it back on, correct?  The problem is how to make an individual setting change that the collection admins can't mess with.

  • There is no way to open it up for a single site collection while locking it down for every other site collection that can't be changed by Site Collection Administrators.  That's just the way its designed to work.  The only thing you can really do is to create a governance policy that specifies where SPD can and cannot be used and then enforce it.  You can't prevent it using settings that site collection administrators can't change.
