Arguments about usage of grid/rectangle

hey guys just a quick little question,

a teacher asked us to create a start screen like layout. but now we have an argument about grids vs rectangles. if you look at the second image there is an background, text and an image in the grid for me or his rectangle. so what do you guys think? grid or rectangle please provide a reason for it so we can end this discussion once and for all.

I'm not sure what you mean by grids vs. rectangles here. The two images don't appear to be showing the same thing (the second is a single tile from the first grid).
