Does Speech API support IPA tone letters (˥ ˨ ˩ ˦ ˧) in <phoneme> tag? RRS feed

  • Question

  • As Speech API accepts SSML input, I would expect it to support the entire set of Unicode IPA symbols, including tone letters (˥ ˨ ˩ ˦ ˧).

    But as it turned out, I got "400 Voice  not supported" when trying the following input:

    <speak version="1.0" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2001/10/synthesis" xmlns:mstts="http://www.w3.org/2001/mstts" xml:lang="zh-HK">
        <phoneme alphabet="ipa" ph="tou˩˨"> tou </phoneme>
    </speak>

    Does this mean that Speech API does not support tone letters?

    And, what other methods can be used if I want to change the tone of a word? (perhaps the <prosody> tag?)

    Thanks!

  • 404 error means the voice name is not specified.

    it is required to use SSML voice tag to specify the voice to use

    Pls see a full voice list here:
