Connect to SSAS tabular model hosted on azure VM via excel powerview RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm having an issue connecting to a SSAS tabular model directly from excel when creating a powerview sheet. Trying to do this gives me the typical "Sorry, something went wrong while loading the model for the item or data source..."

Interestingly, the same tabular model and connection string works if i select PivotTable (rather than PowerView report) in excel which indicates that the connection is at least possible and SSAS is configured correctly? I'm at a loss at this point as to why this could be happening - is it a bug in PowerView? Is it a known issue?

  • Hi Icon1234,

According to your description, you cannot create a PowerView worksheet to connect to SQL Server Analysis Services tabular mode hosted on azure VM, right? For the error message "Sorry, something went wrong while loading the model for the item or data source", it seems this is a bug in PowerView. Here is a similar issue, and cannot solve it with many ties.

  • Power View in Excel 2013 only connects to embedded Power Pivot models. Connection to SSAS Tabular is still not supported in Excel 2013 SP1 (unfortunately).

  • That can't be right - it works on my localhost!

This link explicitly mentions connecting excel 2013 to a tabular model in ssas:

  • Sorry you're right - I was thinking to DAXMD support (DAX over Multidimensional).

Which SSAS version (build) do you have on the server?
