Capture the event when a rule (any rule) fires in Outlook 2010? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've been asked to add a feature to an existing add-in that I've written that fires when any rule is processed in Outlook, but I do not see documentation as to how to capture this event.

  • Hello,

The Outlook object model doesn't provide an event that occurs on invoking a rule.

In Outlook 2007-2010, you can deduce how a given set of rules reacts to a given email using the the object model. However, I think this is a huge task. Besides, it requires to know when Outlook starts processing the current set of rules. I could think about adding a "Run a script" rule that invokes a macro in the client's Outlook (to indicate that the list of rules is being processed) and placing that rule before the first rule in the list but this will not work in the real world; to start with, you cannot create such a rule  programmatically.
