Azure Storage Account - General Purpose or Blob Storage RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am able to backup my databases to a general purpose Azure storage account.

Azure offers a newer type of storage account called "Blob Storage".  This type of account offers "cool" access pricing.  Since the ideal for my team is what we won't need to access our backups, the reduced pricing seems compelling.

I am having trouble in getting this working though.

    Msg 3271, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
A nonrecoverable I/O error occurred on file "https://[edited].blob.core.windows.net/test/test.BAK:" Backup to URL received an exception from the remote endpoint. Exception Message: The remote server returned an error: (400) Bad Request..
    Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
    BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

I verified the storage account firewall is set to "open to the Internet".

  • Hi Ron Howe,

SQL Server backup uses page blobs as the Blob type, Azure provides support for page blob files only when the account kind is set to General Purpose, please create a new storage account, and specify General Purpose for the Account Kind setting.
