dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe install - unexpected shutdown RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've tried installing dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe several times and keep getting an unexpected shutdown during the process. What I mean by "unexpected shutdown" is that the computer reboots as if power was just interrupted and restored. Windows restarts with an "unexpected shutdown" notice and the option to boot into safe mode. I've looked at the install logs a little and it appears to occur at about the time the netfx_Extended_x86.msi portion of it gets started. I'm on a Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 32-bit, Intel Core 2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40 GHZ, with 2 GB RAM. I'm hoping some of you folks may have an opinion as to what may be going on. I'd attach install log files to this message but I can't see an option to do so in this forum. Even though I hate doing this in a forum post, I'll copy the last portion of my "Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Setup_20110418_145545101.html" log into this message. Let me know if any of the other install log files would be helpful. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Here's the last portion of the log:

  • Hi ChipsNSalsa,

    Welcome to the MSDN Forum.

    As far as I know, during the installation of .NET Framework 4.0 does not require restart your system. However, you can pass the /norestart switch to force the Setup program not rebooting automatically.

    According to the installation logs, I could not get enough information to find the cause of this issue. Would you please follow the steps below to collect the installation logs for me?

    1. Download Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Standalone Installer) from the link below:
      http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=0a391abd-25c1-4fc0-919f-b21f31ab88b7
    2. Please go to Control Panel >> Uninstall a program, check whether the .NET Framework 4 exists in the programs list. If so, please uninstall it;
    3. Turn off your anti-virus/antispyware software during installation;
    4. Install the latest Windows updates from the Windows Update site: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com;
    5. Clean your %temp% folder (Start Menu >> Run >> Type "%temp%);
    6. Run the setup with Administrator privilege: right-click the installer -> Run as administrator;
    7. Collect the logs from "%temp%" folder with the Log Collection Tool: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/heaths/archive/2008/05/09/visual-studio-and-net-log-collection-utility.aspx
    8. Send the vslogs.cab file to me (E-mail: v-anwu_at_microsoft_dot_com).
      Note: Please attach the link of this post in the mail.

    Waiting to hear from you.

    Best Regards,

  • dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe indeed dose not require a restart. What was happening amounted to a core dump minus the blue screen part way through the installation.

    I decided to take matters into my own hands. On an installed MS software "conflict" hunch, I decided to uninstall virtually everything Microsoft from my system except for the OS and OS updates. I had perviously tried uninstalling everything .NET and installing dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe to no avail. After uninstalling everything Microsoft execpt for the OS and OS updates I was able to install dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe without my machine dumping on me. I'm now going through the laborious process of re-installing Microsoft stuff I had and still need. Bottom line is the problem is solved.

    Thank you for your time and effort.
