Presentation saved as PPTX in 2007 will not load in PPT 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • During the course of writing some automation code for Powerpoint 2007, I stumbled across a rather nasty problem in Powerpoint 2010.  It started with a PPT file saved in 2003 format with an embedded EMF metafile.  The PPT file opens just fine in Powerpoint 2007, but in Powerpoint 2010, the presentation is completely blank.

Furthermore, when I open the file in PPT 2007 and save it as a PPTX file, and then attempt to load it in Powerpoint 2010, PPT2010 tells me the PPTX file is corrupt, requires repair, and then proceeds to strip out the EMF metafile from the slide.

I've posted samples of the offending files below.  There's only one slide, and it contains only the embedded metafile:

    http://www.phxsoftware.com/files/embedded metafile.ppt  62kb (the original 2003 version, opens fine in PPT XP, 2003, 2007)

http://www.phxsoftware.com/files/embedded metafile.pptx 67kb (converted in PPT 2007, won't open without needing repair in PPT 2010)
