Developing Sample application for Windows Embedded 8 or 8.1 Handheld RRS feed

  • Question

  • I want to build a sample application for "Windows Embedded 8 or 8.1 Handheld",I have downloaded all the SDK and I have a Windows 8 Machine with Visual Studio 2012 with Update 4.

**I have few questions regarding this.**

    1. Is Windows Embedded 8 and Windows Embedded 8.1 are same or we have to use 8.1 which is latest for developing applications for Windows Embedded 8 Handheld applications.

    2. Is Sample applications provided in Link 1 (Provided below) link for Windows Phone 8.1 are same for Windows Embedded Handheld 8.1 or these are just for Windows Phone 8.1.

    3. The "Barcode scanner" sample application provided in Link 2 (Provided below) link, is sample of what? windows Embedded 8 Handheld SDK?

    4. If not, then were we can find Windows Embedded 8 or 8.1 Handheld SDK sample applications?

    5. Which version of Windows OS and Which version of Specific version of Visual Studio we need to use for developing Windows Embedded 8 or 8.1 Handheld applications.

    6. Also is it true, if we develop application for Windows Phone or Store it will work from Windows Embedded 8 Handheld?

I searched for these details on Microsoft website but i just got download links for the SDK and no other details.

  • Question 1:

Windows Embedded Standard 8 (WES8) is based on Windows 8. Windows Embedded Industry 8.1 is based on Windows 8.1. These are x86 only solutions.

Windows Handheld 8.1 is based on Windows Phone Core 8.1 - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn715922(v=winembedded.81).aspx. Windows Phone is for ARM processors. The base OS is Windows for all, but  the development paths are different.

    Question 2:

The Sample application for Windows Phone 8.1 is only for Windows Phone. there is a separate SDK for Handheld, but I haven't seen it.

    Question 3:

The barcode scanner sample is for Windows 8.1 and WEI 8.1 Modern UI. There is the POS for .NET for form applications that covers other POS devise. Windows Handheld has a different API and SDK.

    Question 5:

Visual Studio 2013 seems to be recommended.

This forum is for WES8, I think your questions can best be addressed on the Windows Mobile forums: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=windowsmobiledev

  • Thanks for the reply and answers to my questions.

For Question number 3, the confusion happened because of information provided on MS website under "Use an emulator to simulate a barcode scanner (Handheld 8)" (Please find link at the end).

This Page provides details on how to use Emulator to simulate the scanner for WE8H, so i thought that this sample is for WE8H, it is not right?

Also where can i find sample for Windows Embedded 8 Handheld Sample applications and also which emulator to use for emulation the device for Handheld, where can i find these details, if you have any links for this it will be more helpful.

  • Windows Embedded Handheld appears to be a mystery product from Microsoft. There are few vendors that have solutions from what I hear. Here is the link to the SDK:
