Unable to install Visual Studio 2015 Update 3 (or 2)

    Question

  • I'm currently using Microsoft Visual Studio Professional 2015 14.0.24720.00 Update 1.

I tried to install the latest update 3 (from the KB3165756 page (I will post directly a link, but I can't because my account is not verified and I don't know what I should do in order to change that), which downloads vs2015.3.exe). When I run that installer it informs me that it is for Visual Studio 2015 Update 1 and that I already have it installed.

Seeing how I'm on Update 1 and I want to skip directly to 3 I thought to try to install Update 2 first. So I went to the Update 2 page (KB3151378) and downloaded vs14-kb3151378. When I run that I am informed that "This update requred VIsual Studio Update 2 to be installed" (I can provide the log if needed).

My next thought was that maybe I should try to get an earlier version. Looking at the Update 2 page I saw that the oldest version is 14.0.25125.03 (from 3/30/2016), but there's only one download link on that page (the one for vs14-kb3151378).

My question is: how do I update to the latest Visual Studio version? I don't want to uninstall the current version and do a fresh install.

  • KB3151378 and vs14-kb3151378 relate to the latest hotfixes for Update 2, not update 2 itself. Likewise KB3165756 refers to the latest hotfixes for Update 3, not update 3 itself.

You need either the update itself or the whole application, for example from:

How can I get just the update? The only pages I found on MSDN are those related to the hotfixes. If I go to Tools -> Extensions and Updates... -> Updates -> Product Updates I can see an entry for Update 3 (14.0.25420.01), but when I click update I am prompted to download vs2015.3 (again, I can't post the link I'm redirected to) which tells me that it is Update 1 and that I already have that installed.

  • Hi Cristi_,

    Thanks for your post.

    >>I can't because my account is not verified and I don't know what I should do in order to change that

Please ask for a requirement in the following link to verify your account:

    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/338e5c21-c7e3-4519-8791-f819535be481/verify-your-account-36?forum=reportabug

For this issue, as Robert said that the two KB packages are just hotfix for the update 3 and update 2,

If you want to install the newest Update 3, please directly download it from following link:

    https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/news/releasenotes/vs2015-update3-vs

Or you may go to Control Panel to modify your VS, and install the Visual Studio Extensibility Tools Update 3, please the screenshot  below:

Before doing the update 3 installation, here are some tips:

    Disable anti-virus or anti-spyware software.
    Check windows update.
    Clear %TEMP% folder.
    Run the installer as administrator.

If the above still doesn't help, I need you installation log file to troubleshoot this issue,
please use  http://aka.ms/vscollect to gather the installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.zip from %temp% folder. Please upload the file to  https://onedrive.live.com/ and share the link here.

    Best Regards,
