How many instances of reporting services RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I have an instance of SQL server with two databases (say DB1 & DB2), the structure of databases is identical but host information from different departments.

I also have installed on the same SQL server one instance of Reporting Service, the reporting service should be used by the members of the above departments to view reports about their own department only and not the other one.

The reporting service currently only displays reports from the DB1.

    Question:

1- Is it possible to get the reporting service to display reports from both DBs, or should I install a new instance of reporting service for the second DB ?

2- Given the above is it possible eventually to get a consolidated report of both DBs (if that becomes necessary in the future) ?

    Thanks for your help,

    Luca

  • Hi 1Luca,

For Question 1, yes, there is no problem to get the reporting service to display reports from both Databases. When building the report in SSDT, we can add datasources from any databases. Just select the database name so that we can retrieve data there. We do not need to install a new instance for another DB.

For Question 2, it is also possible to builder a report from both DBs. You can make the datasouces dynamical so that report can be executed against different SQL servers or databases. It is also allowed to combine two datasets which have field to match up using Lookup() function.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

    Best Regards,

    Henry
