DR Plan RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    i have 3 questions

1, Can i mirror my 80gb database in a production enviroment, i have read in a few places that mirroring is not allowed in a production enviroment but i have seen some people doing it

2, My log shipping is given error that it could not find the correct media set even though it backed up the primary DB well, i googled it and found out that it because the server where different versions, sql 2008R2 and sql 2008, production DB is on sql2008R2.  Is there a way around this problem other than upgrading to R2 cos when i googled about upgrading i had absolutely no clue how to go about it, could you please break down the upgrading issue to what a dummy would understand or how i can get around this different server issues in my DR plan. DR plan is from bedford to manchester in same domain

3, I used detatch and attach method to copy a database and i iam trying to put it in a standby mode for log shipping, can it be done? if yes how?

i i checked the standby mode in the wizard but it wont go into standby mode in the ssms but shows its on standby mode in the wizard

    1. you can do mirroring 80GB database on production, we have couple of databases on production environments sizing more than 1 TB.

    2. log-shipping from earlier  to newer version is possible but not other way round.  say it is possible from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008 but not other way round as older version does not understand new version log file format.

    3. Detach and attach does not support, you must take full backup from main server and restore onto secondary with stand by more.

I hope this helps you. Let us know if you need any other help

  • In addition, when you look at Mirroring pay attention and be aware of the modes it can be implemented with: synchronous or asynchronous.

  • @Ram,

I think you may have a typo in your 3rd answer - Detach and detach does not support in this scenario

  • @ChunSong Feng- Thanks its a typo ( Yes - we can detach and copy across mdf and ldf to secondary server then attach db, then restore next log backup with stand by mode)
