SQL Server Licensing Policy for 2 Node Fail Over Cluster RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

We've just finished a project on SQL Server Consolidation with 3 high end Physical servers. We've configured Windows Server 2012 Cluster and top of that has configured SQL Server 2012 R2 2 node fail over cluster. My physical host specification is like below (all the 3 node has similar configuration)

    CPU - 2 X 18 Core

    Memory - 512 GB

    We've configured 5 Instances running on the 3 nodes. Instance-1 & 2 running on the host-1; Instance-3 & 4 running on the host-2 and Instance-5 Running on the host-3.

Now, we're using parallelism concept of the  SQL Server and assigned CPU in the Instances like below :

    Instance-1 --- 10 Cpu

    Instance-2 --- 12 Cpu

    Instance-3 --- 15 Cpu

    Instance-4 --- 12 Cpu

    Instance-5 --- 12 Cpu

Now, how many enterprise core licenses should I procure ? what's the policy of Microsoft licensing in this kind of situation. As my all the 108 cores running in the OS level, should i required to procure license for all, or i just have to procure license for assigned cores on the instance.
