Selection of NIC for network transfer in Windows 10 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I am facing a scenario where my software is running on a Windows 10 system which is connected to another Windows 10 system using 2 connectors.

One is 1GbE Ethernet and second one is 10GbE Ethernet.

In my software, I am trying copy some files using fread API in second machine using \\<<MACHINE_NAME>>\<<MYSHARE>>\<<FILE_NAME>> format.

I can see that network traffic is using the 10GbE Ethernet network card. I would like to know, how Windows 10 selects the NIC to be used for file access using share names.

I have a hosts file entry where SECOND machine is mapped with IP of 1GbE ethernet card. This came because of historical reasons like some other software in the system needed that entry when there was only 1GbE connector.

But still Windows is properly fetching 10GbE connection. This is what I need also. But would like to know how Windows is doing this.

Please help me with your suggestions. If this is not the right forum, please let me know.
