Umap - Bing aerial - background RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,
I want to create a map with Umap (openstreetmap) using Bing aerial image as the background. The map will display the places and related stories of the migrants who are now in Paris, France, and who traveled throught different countries, but no geographical information. As I only intend to use the background image with no additional information (no names, no place, nothing) there shouldn't be any copyright problem with Bing. Does someone know what URL I should write for Bing in the related box in Umap ? Or does someone have an alternative solution / tool to create such a map ?

  • You will need a Bing Maps license to use the imagery and will also need to discuss this with the Bing Maps licensing team as this would be against the terms of use and would require an exception. The licensing team can be reached at maplic@microsoft.com

  • Dear,

I have the same question and the Microsoft licensing team can not help me. It should be a technical problem:

I have a map on UMAP.openstreetmap.fr. Since no detailed aerial images are available in my zone (Brussels, Belgium), I am looking to have a "custom background". The supported scheme for that is:

This works fine with other maps, for example:

    a) a static Bing map (but it is static):

    b) a Thunderforest map (but they don’t have Aerial Imagery):

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work with Bing Imagery Metadata:

Can anyone help me with this? On the other fora, people refer to the licensing conditions of Bing Maps, but I do have a KEY (& account).

Is it because the output for Imagery Metadata is json or xml and I need png?

According to wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Aerial_imagery Bing Maps is able to provide this imagery, but I don't know how? I have the feeling that I need to stay with Google Earth/Maps instead of OSM only for that reason.

    Thank you in advance,

    Greetings

    Matthias
