VS2017 install on Build server RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are looking at installing Visual Studio on to our build servers. We already have 2015 in build server and looking for options to install VS2017 into the same server.

The question is Do we need license? or can we install without a license?

    Any documentation is really helpful

  • Hi Vasu Modiboyina,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

First of all, you can install VS 2017 edition on your build servers.

For VS professional and Enterprise version, it requires us to enter the license key after installation (if you have some corresponding licenses under your MSDN subscription account).

Else, VS community is free. You just need to sign in your MS account to unlock it. please check this Docs: How to unlock VS and sign in your MS account for more detail info. But before you install it, please have a look with license terms of VS 2017 community to check if you have a permission to use it.

Hope my answer would be helpful.

    Sincerely

    May

  • Thanks for the info.

We don't have an access to internet for activating the license.Any other way please?

Also,Is there any way without full install of 2017, would it be possible to use 2015 (already installed) components in TFS build server

  • Hi Vasu Modiboyina

As far as I know, you could install VS 2015 and VS 2017 side by side on build server, but if one complete VS 2017 is unnecessary, you don't have to install Visual Studio 2017 extra, which is a development tool. You can download and install the following components from: https://www.visualstudio.com/downloads/#build-tools-for-visual-studio-2017 , named Build Tools for Visual Studio 2017.

    - Tool for Visual studio 2017 > Build Tools for Visual Studio 2017: These Build Tools allow you to build native and managed MSBuild-based applications without requiring the Visual Studio IDE. There are options to install the Visual C++ compilers and libraries, MFC, ATL, and C++/CLI support.

Else, you could use GUI to do the installation, or choose script to install of msbuild, detail info please have a look this similar thread: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/42696948/how-can-i-install-the-vs2017-version-of-msbuild-on-a-build-server-without-instal .
