What causes many (unexpected) Excel instances RRS feed

  • Question

  • Often I take a look at the process list on a machine (both users and mine) and find a few dozen "orphaned" Excel processes (no Excel windows on the desktop). Users do not forcefully open them as new instances, and normally all the workbooks they open by clicking on icons (or links in Outlook) should be merged to already-running single instance. If I have existing instance up and running, typically new process shows up in Process Explorer (just for a split second), then the opening workbook is being passed to existing instance and that "brand new" instance is killed. Turns out this is not always happening and orphaned instance stays, resulting to many, many Excel instances over time. Why and how to fix it?
