Problem installing Framework 2.0 SP2 under XP Pro "The upgrade patch cannot be installed ..." RRS feed

  • Question

  • Can anyone help me with a problem getting .NET Framework SP2 installed on my new ACER Laptop under XP Pro (I need to run Sql Server)

New laptop comes with Framework 1.1 ( + Hotfix)
I want to run Sql Server which needs 2.0 SP2.

    I can install 2.0 and 2.0 SP1 OK.
But when I try to install SP2 it says
"The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer Service because the program to be upgraded may be missing or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program.
Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade path."

I've found a reference http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951950 for SP1 which seems similar, but the fix is for SP1 only.

I also found in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915756/en-us a reference to 2 different update file types.

I did have trouble finding the download for SP2, and the name appeared somewhat different to the SP1 filename - or this could just be a red herring.

    Download files used
    dotnetfx.exe Framework 2.0
    installed OK
    NetFX20SP1_x86.exe was sp1,               installed OK
NDP10_SP_Q321884_En.exe was sp2,   failed  "The upgrade patch cannot be installed ..."

(This query has been previously posted, but appears to have got lost)
