MOSS Forms-based Authentication against Active Directory. ASP.NET Active Directory Provider vs. MOSS LDAP Provider RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm intended to make our Intranet MOSS site available over the Internet. I'd like to use Forms-based Authentication (FBA). Though Basic Authentication is also technically possible, nobody likes how it looks. So I consider the choise of two membership providers here. One is basic ASP.NET 2.0 Active Directory Provider and the other is MOSS 2007 native LDAP provider. I think that core functionality of these two solutions is the same (at least in my case) — both would allow my users authenticate against our Active Directory via FBA. So what should I prefer and why? Is there any feature-by-feature comparison chart of these two options?

I guess there's somewhere must be a table like this:

ASP.NET AD Provider MOSS LDAP Provider
Availability Both WSS and MOSS MOSS only
Compatibility Active Directory only Any LDAP 2.0 or 3.0-compliant source

Membership only Both Membersip and Roles

P.S. I found a good blog post where all the providers are listed. Unfortunately the's no comparison made, only implementation samples are given. But I hope this also helps someone.
