Web Service v API calculated distances. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Our organisation is using Bing Maps API via Microsoft flows to calculate distances on employees mileage claims. Previously the mileages were checked using the Bing Maps Web Service. Since switching methods we have noticed a large discrepancy between the distances returned by both services. We believe this is due to the optimisation carried out by each service. Our API optimises on distance where we assume web service takes traffic etc. into consideration. How can we change optimisation in web service to ensure both methods return the same distance!

  • Hi DMHFchris,

Do you have some specific examples and test cases that show this discrepancy?

  • A route with a distance optimization will no use traffic, as the shortest possible travel distance is calculated. The optimizing for the fastest route will take traffic data into consideration and may result in a longer route, but will be closer the route the user is likely to take at the moment.
