Exchange 2010 Upgrade current or add secondary server. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Good day everyone,

We have a working large 5TB exchange 2010 server and we are looking to upgrade it or to add a secondary exchange server and let the 2010 as archive/history database.

    Appreciate your comments or suggestions.

  • Hi,

not to be stating the obvious, but you should be looking at *retiring* your Exchange 2010 since it's going out of support come October.

That said, if you have a single server hosting 5 TB of Exchange data, you should probably not try to upgrade it, hardware-wise, because there may not be any performance benefit in that (you have probably already reached the maximum of 64GB RAM anyway).

Adding a second server is the best way to start migrating to 2016.

  • Hello Evgenij,  thanks for reply.

Adding secondary server would be possible to setup users can access 2010 as archive and 2016 for the new messages after deployment?

  • You cannot have primary & archive mailbox distributed between Exchange 2010 & Exchange 2016. This will error out.

  • So, primary could be a new 2010 server and current one become the archive?
