How can a server ping a client RRS feed

  • Question

  • How can a single server ping a client, or know that the client is active and ready?

Using wcf callbacks? Is there a ping method or something similar??

  • Technically, server is a slave and should only responds to commands from a client.  there are many layer to a network connection and you must look at multiple layers to get an answer to your question.

Ping is an application layer program that uses TCP as the transport layer.  A WCF is also an application layer that uses HTML messaging and also uses TCP as the transport layer.  The best way of solving you problem is to develop an application layer where the clients send messages to server when they come on and off-line.  You may also want to include a "Keep-Alive" option where the clients send a periodic TCP datagram containing no data so the server knows that the client is still active.
