US Zip Code data Source? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

Do anybody know where Bing maps is getting Zip Code data for the US?

Is the data coming from the US census bureau, as Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs)

Or is it from the United states postal service (USPS)?

im just thinking that, the postal codes from USPS change every month, and the US census bureau, Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs)

Change every 10 years. OR is there i 3th source that i am not aware off?

  • The zip code data in the GeoData API comes from Bing Maps data providers who regularly update this data. Bing Maps has hundreds of data providers globally. I believe HERE maps provides the zip code boundary data. Note that I don't believe USPS actually makes boundary data for zip codes available, just point data. There is a lot of processing done to make boundaries that completely cover the surface of the country and have cut outs for water.

Bing Maps also provides ZCTA's from the US Census as a data source in the Bign Spatial Data Services which you can use the query API with. This is a lot faster than the GeoData API when you need to load a lot boundaries, but is static content as you know.
