N-tier application RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have to propose architecture for an N-tier application(in .net) which is intially devised as client server application
but should have flexibility to enable it for web as well as offline connectivity and later can be scaled to ASP model.

I need to use Net3.0 features and SOX,HIPPA complaince
Can somebody please let me about what technology
(will there be any issue in using wpf for present scenario),
softwares(biztalk etc with some hipaa modules or BPM) should be used in this.

  • Before you jump to mapping technologies you should spend some time thinking about the quality attributes of the system you are designing (requirements such as SOX and HIPPA compliance are a step in the right direction)

You can read an article I published on the activities for architecting solutions here: http://www.ddj.com/dept/architect/192600570 as well as read some of my blogs on the subject at www.rgoarchitects.com/saf

  • I agree with Anron that it appears you are thinking about implementation technology before understand the business problem and more importantly the business constraints, from what you describe you are going to have to comply to some external process and procedures, I would get a detailed understand of the domain model and domain constraints before evening thinking about BizTalk etc.

An approach we use and favour is using levels of abstraction to the architecture\design, a great article about this can be found in the MS Architecture Journal, issue 3.
