Master page for each site? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hey all,

Is it true each site/subsite has its own master page and you can't apply one at the root of the site collection to incorporate all?  I tried to edit the v4.master of my site collection (at least at the root level) to make the logo take you back to the root home page of the site collection from any subsite in the collection with no luck.  The edit looks sound, but if all subsites are in fact using their own separate master pages, that could be my problem?

    Thanks,

    Lynne

  • Each site collection has its own masterpage gallery. All subsites beneath the site collection share the same masterpage gallery. However, the subsites can have a different masterpage applied to them.

In your case, did you publish your masterpage (v4.master) after you made the changes. Are you sure your subsite is using the same masterpage? For e.g. search center uses minimal.master. http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/Blogs/GetThePoint/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=386

  • Hey thanks for your response!

I did publish and have it approved, and I assumed that the subsites were all using the same master since I never specified otherwise...I'm not too worried about the sites that use minimal, I'll look into those later, but for now I just want all the team subsites/document centers/etc to logo-link back to the root home page..

Any way to check that I published the change correctly?

  • Each site does have it's own Master page gallery. However, once the Publishing features are enabled you then have the ability to apply a specific master page to a site and ripple that down to the sub sites below it. If you apply it at the root of a collection, you can effect the entire collection. If you apply it at a sub site you can effect from that point and below. If the publishing infrastructure is not enabled, such as with team sites, then each site controls its own master page and you'll need something like SharePoint Designer to change it.
