sql server 2008 version upgrade failed access to path is denied
Question
-
upgrading from 2008 r2 eval to 2008 r2 enterprise.
Use the maintenance option from setup. Get pretty far along in the process. But then the following error. ( an additional note. setup warns that I am running sql server on a domain controller server. )The link the error message points to has nothing to say. Why would my sql server upgrade fail? If I have to reinstall, will I lose my database data?
thanks,

Hello,Please give full control access on the “C:\program files\Microsoft SQL” folder and subfolders to the Windows Account you are using to run SQL Server setup. Verify that even if you are logged in as an Administrator.
Hope this helps.Regards,

Hello,
Please verify the Windows account you are using to run SQL Server setup has full control access to “c:\program files\Microsoft SQL Server” directory, even when that Windows account is an administrator.
Use the Run as Administrator option to run SQL Server setup also.http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11841-run-administrator.html (Second option)
Hope this helps.Regards,

more info on this. Do the edition upgrade process with a sql server 2008 R2 standard edition version. The upgrade completes. Get a message "your sql edition upgrade is complete. But, attempting to use MS sql server mgmt studio, get the same "eval period has expired" error.
Here are the steps from the install:
- maintenance, edition upgrade
- setup support rules - passed
- warning: computer domain is controller
- product key - burned in
- license terms
- specify instance : MSSQLSERVER
- edition upgrade rule. passed 5.
- click upgrade button
- your sql edition upgrade is complete

Hello,
Happy you upgraded your SQL instance.
The issue with SQL Server Management Studio is a known issue. Please see the following article by Jonathan Kehayias:

I have opened a support incident on this.
Keep us posted because on 2010-08-23, I too am trying to upgrade from SQL Server 2008 Enterprise to SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise while logged in as Administrator and have encountered this error three times with no ability to work around it. The environment is Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise 64-bit, fully patched through August 2010 "Patch Tuesday" via standard Microsoft Update process.
If you think development is tough now, try doing it on punched cards :-)- Proposed as answer by a.kazakov Friday, September 10, 2010 10:57 AM

I tried the accepted answer (setting the permissions on the SQL Server folder) but that didn't work. I tried renaming the file and it did work! Great tip Eric ;)

Looks like not just the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server folder requires the full permissions. I have the same error up and it references:
"Failed to compile C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\DQ\link.exe becase of the following error: The module was expected to contain an assembly manifest. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131018)." This is in addition to another:
"Failed to compile C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DTS\Binn\dtsinstall.exe Error code=0x800700d8"
Oddly, even after providing the permissions, I was unable to allow SQL to have access to those files (there were actually three errors before the installation locked. However, I was allowed to continue installing and when reaching the end of the installation the only error was for the installation of the Distributed Replay Controller. The log said to uninstall this feature and reinstall. Given the permission fix above (thanks Alberto), the reboot and uninstall and reinstall of the Distributed Replay Controller worked without issue.

I solved the problem by simply deleting that file. After that, I clicked retry and setup proceeded normally.
