  • If you can change the file extension (in Windows Explorer) to say .vb and view them in note pad them Visual Studio should be able to read them. If they are not viewable that is indeed a problem.

  • Hi,

In my memory, *.CHK files are created by CheckDisk/ScanDisk, i.e. they are not related to Visual Studio or project.
How did you convert your project to *.CHK file?

  • Hello

I had about 10 projects in my usb and also including images

    Here is what i did:

    1)Went to command prompt

    2)Typed .attrib -h -r -s /s /d F:\*.*

3)Went to my usb and it said Found.000(It was a file)

    4) opened it and it said FILE0000.CHK, FILE0001.CHK, and so on

The ones that are 4 or 24kb only open visual studio 2010 and it shows only "yyyyy"

The other ones that are 1,204kb open visual studio 2010 shows as if it were a zip file

Write a new program to read each file, and look for keywords like:
If the file contains "Microsoft Visual Studio Solution File", it's probably a .sln

If the file contains "<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>" and " Microsoft ResX Schema" it islikely a .resx file

    "<Global.Microsoft.VisualBasic.CompilerServices.DesignerGenerated()>" = designer.vb

    "<Project" and "</Project>" = vbproj.user

    "<PropertyGroup>" = .vbproj

"Public Class" and "End Class" = .vb

These were grabbed from one of my VS2010 projects, your results may vary.

Other File Types do not have strings, they need to be read as bytes

    .suo here contains "D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1"

    .exe "4D 5A 90 00"

Again, you will have to check each of these criteria yourself. That's what I'd do if it was me.

  • Hi,

As I mentioned in the previous post, *.CHK files (FILEnnnn.CHK) have been created by CHKDSK.  You can turn them to original files by changing file extension.
    e.g. *.CHK > *.vbproj
           *.CHK > *.vb
