New Pricing Model April 2018 RRS feed

  • Question

  • In the following article Microsoft announced a new pricing model for Log Analytics.  At first glance it seems much simpler than the previous model.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/monitoring-and-diagnostics/monitoring-usage-and-estimated-costs#new-pricing-model

I am after some clarity on the paid solutions, Insight & Analytics, Automation & Control, Security & Compliance and Protection & Recovery.  These were previously billed on a per node basis for each solution.  Does the new pricing model do away with these charges in favour of the per GB charges or do they still apply?

Also, I recall seeing a note in an article that suggested Service Map pricing is yet to be determined, although I can't seem to find the specific article.  Again, will this also be included in the per GB model or will separate charges apply?

    Cheers,

    Rob

  • Hi

It is always best to address these questions to Microsoft representative but here are my two cents.

Automation & Control or the services under Azure Automation had change in pricing model since Ignite 2017. See:

    https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/automation/

    In summary for those:

    - Update Management is free for any nodes. You only have to pay per GB usage for the data that is stored in Log Analytics.

    - Configuration Management (Azure Automation DSC and Change and Inventory Tracking) is charged per node but it is free for Azure nodes and paid for non-Azure nodes

    - Azure Automation Process Automation does not have any changes in pricing

Overall the price is reduced significantly for non-Azure nodes and even lower for Azure nodes.

Security and Compliance is no longer part of Log Analytics but it is part of Azure Security Center since  Ignite 2017. Azure Security Center uses Log Analytics workspace as platform for storing some data. The Antimalware and Security & Audit solutions are part of ASC. ASC is still paid per node and there is no change in that model:

    https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/security-center/

Protection and Recovery does not have any change in pricing.

Network performance monitoring has its own pricing. You can read the full FAQ here on the topic:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/log-analytics/log-analytics-network-performance-monitor-pricing-faq

The new pricing model for Log Analytics is available here:

    https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/log-analytics/

There you can see the note that Service Map is charged per GB in the new pricing model but a new pricing for Service Map will be announced on July 1, 2018.

Also it is worth checking Azure Monitor pricing for using alerts:

    https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/monitor/

Basically things were segregated into different services and you pay only for the different services you use. That way if you use NPM but you do not use Service Map you do not have to pay for both.
