Cannot Create Calculated Column RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I try to create a new column of type 'Calculated (calculation based on other columns)', as soon as I click the radio button for Calculated I get the error 'An unexpected error has occurred'. I have checked the log for the correlation ID and can see the following:

    10/04/2019 11:17:26.83  w3wp.exe (0x1D44)                        0x4450 SharePoint Foundation          Logging Correlation Data       xmnv Medium   Name=Request (GET:http://sypa-sharepoint:80/sypa/_layouts/15/fldnew.aspx?Web=1&FieldTypeParam=Calculated&DisplayNameParam=testcalc&DescriptionParam=&GroupNameParam=Custom%20Columns&VldFormulaParam=&VldMessageParam=) 30870a9f-fae2-c060-1a3d-845ab6a11975

Can someone shed some light on this for me please?

    Thanks

  • Hi J Skyes,

Can you check what is the database compatibility in SQL? Database with compatibility level set to 1200 - we cannot create a calculated column, when we try to create calculated column and save button we will get the error like "

"Failed to save modifications to the server. Error returned: 'An unexpected error occurred

Please refer the below Microsoft document for this to fix:

  • Hi,

Does Habibur’s reply helpful? You could mark the helpful post as answer so it would help others find helpful information quickly.

If you need further help, it would be better to provide more details for ULS log for troubleshooting.

    Best Regards,

    Lee

  • Hi

Thanks for the reply.  We are running on SQL Server 2014 (SP3) and the compatibility level is 120 so I don't think this issue applies to our config.  Do you have any other possible solutions please.

    Thanks

  • I'm afraid that's all the information that was available in the log.

  • I have some further information on this....

I can create a calculated column at the very top level of my site collection, but I get the error when creating one on a sub site and within a Content Type in a sub site. However, I can create one directly on a list in a sub site.

I have also looked at some calculated columns that have been created previously in a sub site and they are now corrupt  - 'an unexpected error has occurred' when I try to edit them.

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

The error is too general, need more detailed information for researching.
