MODI Alternative in Office 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've been using the MODI component to OCR documents in C# with Office 2003 and 2007. With Office 2010, this component is no longer available.

Does anyone have any examples of the OCR component in Office 2010? VB.Net or C# will be fine, thanks.

  • Hello,

You can use it from OneNote 2010. Check replies here,

  • HI Ji

We have written an ASP.NET 2.0 application that makes use of MODI from Office 2007 to perform OCR on images. it is the heart of our application. We bought a 64 bit server and installed MS Windows server 2008 64 bit to make use of higher than 4GB RAM. When we port our application on the 64 bit server we got an error. After doing lot of research we realised that MODI will not work on 64 bit server/OS. Since there no 64 bit Office 2007 server we thought office 2010 may be the solution, only to realise that MODI is deprecated. But I notice from your answers here that OCR component is not deprecated and can be used from OneNote. But we need to use it from a web application. Can we still do it ? If so what dll can we use?

  • Hi tagcloud,

As far as I know, the OCR is a featuer built into OneNote 2010, it is not a separate component (DLL) that can be used in external applications.

Also as a side note, automating Office applications on Server side is a very unstable architecture; there are many issues related to this. Here is a KB article that describes about some of the issue and also suggests some alternatives:

  • I have the same issue. I have an app that uses MODI object model to perform OCR and i would like to know if this feature is available in Office2010, if so how can it be used.

    Anyone knows something about this?

    Thanks:

  • Actually, the MODI component is avaliable for Office 2010. See: Install MODI for use with Microsoft Office 2010
