Visual Studio 2015 won't activate on Windows 7 with all updates installed

    Question

  • I am struggling with activating Visual Studio 2015 installation, getting the error "We could not refresh the credentials for the account

There was a problem executing within the global mutex 'AccountManagerAdalCacheMutex'".

The problem is persistent, summary of steps done so far to fix it:

    - running "devenv.exe /ResetSetttings" did not help

     - confirmed running IE 11 already

    - no proxy (all proxy settings unticked)

    - no firewall

    - added https://www.visualstudio.com/ , https://login.microsoftonline.com/

and https://login.live.com/ to trusted sites after resetting zone settings

    - javascript in IE is enabled

    - tried 2 separate MSDN accounts

What can be wrong with this installation?

  • Hi Michał Turecki,

According to your description, this issue occurs after you installing your Visual Studio and you have tried two different MSDN accounts. So this issue should be not related to the MSDN account.

I suggest you try with following steps to troubleshoot this issue.

    1. Run your Visual Studio as administrator to make sure it has enough permissions to do any operations.
    2. Run your Visual Studio in safe mode to prevents all third-party VSPackages from loading when Visual Studio starts, thus ensuring stable execution.
    3. Run "devenv /resetuserdata" command to clear all user data for your Visual Studio.
    4. Repair your Visual Studio.

If the problem still exist, please check the ActiveLog.xml under the path of %AppData%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0. This file will log all operations when you operate Visual Studio. Whether there has any error information that can help us find out what causes this issue.

    Best Regards,
    Weiwei
