Sharepoint and Powerpivot on different machine:

Hi,

I've installed and configued sharepoint in one machine and need to install Powerpivot with sharepoint (SQL server 2012) in another machine.

Can anybody please let me know can we have sharepoint on one machine and Powerpivot with sharepoint (sql server 2012) in another machine? If yes, please do le me know how can I acheive the same.

I'm working on the same scenario.

1. I have an existing SharePoint test farm.
2. I set up a new server and joined it to the farm in an application server role (not a WFE). I installed PowerPivot for SharePoint (PP4SP) 2012 RC0 following http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee210708(v=sql.110).aspx
3. I am in the process of trying to configure PP4SP using these instructions http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee210609(v=sql.110).aspx. Solutions have been deployed to the farm but I haven't been able to create the Service Application yet because "SQL Server Power Pivot Service Application" is not showing up in the New dropdown.

I ran the PowerShell commands that deploy the solutions on the 2nd server (where PP4SP was installed). I suspect that there is something that needs to be installed physically on the server where Central Administration is running as well.

Running the PowerPivot Configuration wizard again the next morning was successful. I now suspect that there was something queued as a SharePoint timer job that had not been fully deployed. Alternatively, the nitely cycling of app pools may have forced updated some cached information that SharePoint had. In any case, I now have PP4SP up and running on one  server in an existing 3-server SharePoint 2010 SP1 farm!

Hi Santosh,

The separation you are talking about is more of Sharepoint on one system and the SQL Server 2012 used for hosting Sharepoint databases on another system. This you can definitely do starting with the installation of SQL Server 2012 and then configuring Sharepoint to use it as the database server.

The installation of Powerpivot for Sharepoint has to be done on the system where Sharepoint is installed. Here it depends whether it is a single system or a farm. If it is a farm, you need to manually configure your App servers and Web servers for Powerpivot to work correctly. The PowerPivot configuration tool can be used to configure this. You will have to install Powerpivot for Sharepoint on each of the App servers and web services can be installed on the WFE (web front end) using the solutions deployment

If it is a single machine, then all the web services and PowerPivot services along with Excel services will reside on the same system and once you are done with the configuration using Powerpivot configuration tool, you should be good to go.
