Bugs appear on the backlogs and boards with tasks - Advantages and Disadvantages RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

In the initial roll out, We have customized both PBI and Bug WI to have the same states and transitions and worked with no issues. Also, both PBI and Bug was managed from Backlog board.

Recently, there was a ask from Customer to configure Bug with Task board. We found the following:

    1. Common States of Bug and Task can be configured in Task Board.

    2. Bug WI States and Transition to be changed to match up the Task States and Transitions to work effectively.

Please can anyone help us with the advantages and disadvantages of using Bug with Task board. Can this work effectively when WI is customized?

I am not sure how it is available as a configurable option as States and Transitions for both Bug and Task are different.

    Many thanks

  • Hi,

You do not need to alter any states in changing the Bug behavior. The sprint board columns will auto adjust based on how you set bugs to behave.

For example bugs with tasks the iteration board looks like below.

And when bugs with PBIs the iteration board changes as below (Notice the change in columns).

If you really want to change the states to match where the bug work item appears, change them and it also works fine.

    Cheers!

  • Thank you Chaminda.

As per your suggestion, Bug States and Transitions remain unchanged and Task board will show states from both Task and Bug WI.

If the Bug is reconfigured with PBIs, Backlog board will show states from PBI and Bug. The only difference between both the options is the view and we should not be worried about matching up fields between the WI.

In the past, Bug will throw error message when we import the customized Bug WI into the system as the states were not matching between PBI and Bug. This is for the reason to show up in Backlog board. It may not be same case here with task board.

Please pass on your inputs if my understanding above is incorrect

    Many thanks
