Replacement of on premises NAS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Team,

We are currently using an on premises Network attached storage for our file server and looking for an option which we can use in azure to replace the NAS.

    Below are our requirements:

We are located in Switzerland and looking for an option which we can utilize n azure to replace our current NAS system. We need 1TB of storage and folder level permission features for the users so that users can map the respective folders in their windows machines and different department should have their own shared folder and people from one department should be able to access folder of his/her respective department only.

Kindly help me if we can achieve above using azure file share or file sync?

  • Firstly, apologies for the delay in responding here and any inconvenience this issue may have caused.

Use Azure File Sync to centralize your organization's file shares in Azure Files, while keeping the flexibility, performance, and compatibility of an on-premises file server. Azure File Sync transforms Windows Server into a quick cache of your Azure file share. You can use any protocol that's available on Windows Server to access your data locally, including SMB, NFS, and FTPS. You can have as many caches as you need across the world.

We strongly recommend that you read Planning for an Azure Files deployment and Planning for an Azure File Sync deployment

You can use Azure Files to create file shares in the cloud, without being responsible for managing the overhead of a physical server, device, or appliance. We do the monotonous work for you, including applying OS updates and replacing bad disks. To learn more about the scenarios that Azure Files can help you with, see Why Azure Files is useful.

Azure File Sync limits and Azure File Share limits

What is Azure File Sync? You can use Azure File Sync to centralize your organization's file shares in Azure Files, while keeping the flexibility, performance, and compatibility of an on-premises file server. Azure File Sync transforms your Windows Server machines into a quick cache of your Azure file share. You can use any protocol that's available on Windows Server to access your data locally, including SMB, Network File System (NFS), and File Transfer Protocol Service (FTPS). You can have as many caches as you need across the world.

Azure File Share: Azure file shares are SMB storage that can be used to share files to apps or local systems.

I would recommend using Azure File sync based on your scenario.

Kindly let us know if the above helps or you need further assistance on this issue.

  • Sumanth,

Most ISPs block SMB 3.0 protocol.  We've resulted to using VPN to connect on premise site to Azure Cloud in order to effectively utilize Azure Files.  Is this what you're seeing with other businesses or is there another way?

  • The SMB protocol requires TCP port 445 to be open; connections will fail if port 445 is blocked. You can check to see if your firewall is blocking port 445 with the Test-NetConnection cmdlet. You can learn about various ways to workaround blocked port 445 here.
